Djurgårdens IF
Description
Djurgårdens IF Fotboll, commonly just "Djurgården" (pron. 'jʉ:(r)gɔɳ or ['jʉ:rˌgoːɖɛn]), is a Swedish football team located in Stockholm. The club is also nicknamed "Stockholms stolthet" (lit. "the pride of Stockholm"). The club, formed 12 March 1891, have won 11 national championship titles and 4 national cup titles. They are currently playing in the highest Swedish league, Allsvenskan. Their main Stockholm rivals are AIK and Hammarby. The supporter club is called Järnkaminerna (The Iron Stoves).
Djurgårdens IF have been one of the dominating clubs in Swedish football in the 2000s. Djurgården were relegated from Allsvenskan in 1999, but after one year in second league "Superettan", they returned to the highest league in 2001. Djurgården finished second in 2001, won Allsvenskan and the cup - Svenska Cupen - in 2002, Allsvenskan in 2003, and Svenska Cupen in 2004 before winning Allsvenskan for the third time in the 2000s in 2005.
In English circumstances, the club is often called "Djurgårdens" or "Djurgardens" which is incorrect. The club's full name in Swedish is Djurgårdens Idrottsförening, abbrieviated Djurgårdens IF, which literally translates to "Djurgården's Athletic Association". When the club's name is shortened the word "Idrottsförening" ("IF") is removed and the name becomes - Djurgården - spelled without the s. The same applies to Helsingborg, Halmstad and Trelleborg. This is because possessive pronoun in Swedish is created simply by adding s to the possessing object, not "'s" as in English. The shortened form "Djurgår'n", is the most popular pronunciation among the fans.
