Description

Maccabi Petah Tikva FC (Hebrew: מכבי פתח תקווה) is an Israeli football club, based in the city of Petah Tikva. It is part of the Maccabi sports club and currently plays in the top Israeli division. Throughout its history the club failed to win the Israeli league championship, however they won the State Cup twice (1935 and 1952) and the Haaretz Tournament cup in 1940. They have been making steady progress over the past few years, finishing third and second in the Israeli Premier League table in 2003/04 and 2004/05 (respectively).

The club was founded in 1912 by a group of Jewish students from Petah Tikva, who were studying in the Ottoman city of Constantinople (many of them would later serve in the Ottoman army during the Great War). It is therefor the second oldest Jewish football club in Eretz Israel after Maccabi Tel Aviv, formed in 1906. The club's local rivals, Hapoel, were established in 1934.

The "Maccabi Petah Tikva Ground" was established in 1926, and the club played there until the late 1970s. They currently play in a 7,500 seats stadium.

Their greatest achievement to date was qualifying for the group stages of the 2005/06 UEFA Cup, following a stunning 5-2 away win over Serbian champions Partizan Belgrade on September 29, 2005.
