Mastodon are a Grammy-nominated heavy metal band from Atlanta, Georgia.
Mastodon's style includes heavy, down-tuned and frequently quite complex guitar riffs, jazz-influenced drumming, odd time signatures, and long, melodic instrumental interludes, which find them often categorized in the progressive metal genre. Their music also includes influences of doom metal, stoner rock, hardcore punk, thrash and some death metal and grindcore. The band's fans have humorously dubbed the genre 'whalecore', in reference to their 2004 album Leviathan.
