Description

Universitario de Deportes is a Peruvian football club based in Lima. Also referred to as Universitario or La U, they are one of most successful football clubs in Peru. They were founded as Federación Universitaria in 1924 by professors and students from the National University of San Marcos but were forced to re-name themselves in 1931.

They currently play in the top tier of Peruvian football—the Primera División Peruana—and have never been relegated to the Second Division. Since 2000, they play their home games at the Estadio Monumental, the largest in Peru. Universitario and Alianza Lima are involved in a derby called the Peruvian Super Classic (Superclásico Peruano). This derby started in 1928 in the club's debut in the first division and Universitario won it 1-0.

Universitario has won twenty-four first division titles, more than any other club in Peru, and was the first Peruvian club to reach the final of the Copa Libertadores. The first title won by the club was in 1929, one year after their debut in the first division. Their first Bi-Championship (bicampeonato) title was won in the seasons of 1945 and 1946. The last title won by the club in 2000 was also their Tri-Championship title. Universitario's youth team is América Cochahuayco which currently participates in the Second Division.
